Etymology of typhoon



The word typhoon (violent storm, whirlwind, tornado), comes from the Greek typhon [whirlwind; Gr: τυφών], personified as a giant, father of the winds, perhaps from typhein "to smoke" (origin of the word typhus).


In modern Greek:

Etymology of cinema

Origin of the word cinema. .
The word cinema comes from the French cinéma, shortened from cinématographe, coined 1890s by Lumiere brothers, who invented it, from the Greek cinema (movement; better pronounced as kinima; Gr: κίνημα), from the verb cino (to move; better pronounced as kino; Gr: κινώ).

Origin of election
The word election (e-lec-tion) is directly derived from the Latin verb eligere (to choose, select, etc) from the root word leg- (to gather, to collect, to choose, to pick out etc), which is related  to the Greek verb lego (to collect, to choose, to say etc) and the prefix ex- , which is related to the Greek prefix ek- (out of, from).

Etymology of taxi and tax

Etymology of taxi, tax.
The word taxi is shortening of the taximeter cab (introduced in London in March 1907), from taximeter (automatic meter to record the distance and fare) [1898] from the French taximetre, from the German Taxameter (1890), which was coined from the Latin taxa (tax, charge) from taxo (to evaluate, to put in an order, to fix the value of a thing, to rate, to tax, to touch), related to the Greek verb tasso (to put in an order, to fix the value of a thing; τάσσω).
