The word CARTOON comes from the Italian word cartone (pasteboard), as, artists preliminary used to sketch on such paper. The word comes from the Latin carta (a piece of paper), from the Greek chartes (a leaf of papyrus, a piece of paper).
In modern Greek:

hartes: map [χάρτης]
carta: card [κάρτα]
